Today it was her birthday
Everybody cried
Selfie ‘gainst the sunset
Fell down the cliff and died
Brazilian Fernanda Morella, celebrating her
33rd birthday at Kangaroo Point Cliffs fell to her death taking a selfie.
Emergency services attempted to revive her at the bottom of the
cliffs but she was announced dead at the scene
I cringe at the dangerous situations some people place themselves in
just for the sake of a selfie…..to put up on Facebook for all their friends to see

There’s a kind of morbid and heartless ‘they deserve it for being so vain’ vibe to these stories, but social media has a lot to answer for in the modern world, for creating the conditions, where a number of follower or like icons justifies attaining the image you present to the world. Are the people stupid for valuing and trying to maintain the number, or the companies liable for inventing the desire for it in the first place?

I blame the companies for inventing the desire for these in the first place. Tobacco companies, poker machines etc. We’re all human and not everyone has the power to resist these temptations. I think social media has got a lot to answer for…….
