Serious now. Scientific American hosted a talk. Googled it. What got me is they scripted all the um’s, uh’s. What’s goin’ on here Ed?
‘This is Scientific American’s Science Talk, posted on March 27, 2020. I’m Steve Mirsky. I’m going to let my guest introduce himself in a moment, because he does a better job than I could.
‘So I’m Michael Marshall and I’m the project director of the good thinking society, which is a charity based in the UK. Uh, the whole purpose of our charity is to promote science to challenge pseudoscience. So we’ll do work, uh, to forward science education.’
Maybe I should be, err, more scientific, um, in my communications with you uh?

Good grief. I am so sadly spotty in my attentions to you and your work, Don. Um… not sure what to say, um, about that.
I recently read a book (true story!) titled “Um…” it was about transcribers who have to include everything a speaker says – mostly government types. It also explored the reasons why we have these hesitations in our speech and whether it is something should or should not train ourselves to avoid.
