FCS Daily Music Video – ‘Biko’ Peter Gabriel, Playing for Change

Bantu Stephen Biko (18 December 1946 – 12 September 1977) was a South African anti-apartheid activist. He was at the forefront of a grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Biko died at the hands of the police. In October 2003, South Africa’s justice ministry announced that the five policemen would not be prosecuted because the statute of limitations had elapsed and there was insufficient evidence to secure a prosecution.

Lyrics below

September ’77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

You can blow out a candle
But you can’t blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

And the eyes of the world are
watching now
watching now

  1. Wow. That one is dynamite. I love the Playing for Change videos, and I appreciate deeply their mission. I subscribed to their YouTube channel long ago, but I must have missed the notification on this one. So good. Thank you for sharing this, Don.
