Other birds observed during play were magpies. One image captured several magpies involved in a swing game.
“The juvenile magpie is hanging from a towel placed for drying on a Hill’s hoist — an example of solo playing,” Professor Kaplan explained.
“The other magpies join in on the ground — this is becoming social play. The magpie on the left pulls on the leg, making the hanging magpie swing towards it. The second one, waiting on the right, pushes the hanging magpie.
“They all have a role to play in making the dangling magpie swing, a game parents also play in playgrounds with their children.”
