Etta James was an American blues singer who sang at the Montreux Jazz Festival many times during her career. She was Blues Artist of the Year on no less than fourteen occasions. She died after a long battle with leukemia on 20 January 2012, age 73

Everyone is mortal
Everyone will die
Etta James has passed away
Many said goodbye
Reader you are mortal
Reader you will die
Even I as poet
Some day I will die

Not me! I am immortal! No. Wait. That’s immoral. Never mind.

I love Etta James, Don. She’s awesome.
I used to sing in a secular gospel choir. Yes, there is such a thing. There is a lot of cross over between gospel and the blues, and of course, Etta James was big in both worlds.

This somehow reminded me of a birthday song my daughter’s quirky friends sang for her on her 16th birthday …. sung as a dirge:
Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
One year older and closer to death
Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
I’m sure it wouldn’t go over so well in later years!!!
